The fiancé of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been granted immunity from prosecution in the murder trial.
“She’s going to have to testify about various things and as long as she tells the truth about these things, even if they incriminate herself she cannot be charged,” said legal analyst Ken Schreiber.
Schreiber explains to ABC 6 News why this is so important.
“They wouldn’t have done this, granted her immunity, unless she was a significant part of their case,” said Schreiber.
In the past prosecutors have said that Shayanna Jenkins lied to a grand jury dozens of times, including when she said she didn’t know what she did with a box she took from the basement of the couple’s North Attleboro home.
Earlier in Hernandez’s trial, Jenkins’ sister Shaneah testified about how Shayanna was acting after Odin Lloyd’s body was found.
The specifics of the immunity deal have been filed under seal. We’ll have to wait for testimony to resume to find out what Shayanna Jenkins will say if she’s called to the stand.
Another thing Schreiber pointed out, the fact that the weather has been hurting momentum in the prosecutions case. He says a move like this could get it moving again.
The trial is expected to start back up again on Wednesday.
