NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — For the first time in nearly three years, one of Rhode Island’s most historical Newport mansions is opening back up to the public.

The Preservation Society of Newport County said Thursday that the 18th-century Hunter House will open on Friday for guided tours.

Tours will be offered this Friday and will run on weekends until Sept. 4., but will resume on Sept. 10. The tours, however, will only be available Saturdays and Sundays until Oct. 2.

The Hunter House was built around 1748 for Deputy Gov. Jonathon Nichols and was a called a National Historic Landmark in 1968.

“We look forward to reintroducing Hunter House to visitors and telling a more complete story of its past,” Preservation Society CEO Trudy Coxe said. “Our staff and fellows have done extensive research, and we are excited to provide an engaging new understanding of this historically significant property.”

Tickets can only be purchased online or by visiting a ticket sales station.
