Homeless man looking for food robs elderly couples in Warwick

A homeless man has been charged after two elderly couples reported burglaries at their homes in Warwick.

In the early morning hours on Thursday, officers were called to the Cowesett neighborhood of Warwick on a call of “suspicious activity.” A 92-year-old man reported someone knocking on his door; when he left his bedroom, he found the door open, and saw someone walking away from his house. Police searched the home and found a broken window with blood on the scene.

Another officer spotted a man on someone else’s lawn a few streets away, but did not search the area until after he was gone. He found signs of forced entry into a garage door, and upon entering, found the same man from before. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Michael Collins.

Collins said that he was only trying to find some food and stay warm.

Collins was charged with two counts of breaking and entering into a residence of a person over 60 years of age. Detectives interviewed him, and determined he had no intent to harm anyone.
