A 50-foot humpback whale was spotted in the Narragansett Bay on Monday morning. The whale was seen breaching and playing for about 45 minutes.
North Kingstown Harbormaster, Ed Hughes, was at a marina north of Quonset Point when he saw what he thought was a boat before realizing it was a humpback.
Hughes says he has worked on the water his whole life and has seen humpbacks, but never miles into the bay. He was able to snap a few photos of the whale.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) says officers checked on the whale, which was in good condition and last seen headed south.
