Independent Man statue headed to North Main Street Armory in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Independent Man has had quite a journey in the last few months.
The iconic statue will make its next stop at the Rhode Island National Guard’s North Street Armory in Providence to undergo restoration work over the next few months, according to the office of Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee.
A hand-crafted paddle cradle will house the statue as it’s transported by flatbed truck to the armory.
“Preserving this important piece of our state’s history would not be possible without the support from the Rhode Island National Guard, and we’re grateful for their assistance,” said McKee.
President and Principal Conservator of EverGreene Architectural Arts Mark Rabinowitz will manage the restoration process.
A contract with the company is in its finalization stages.
Included in the restoration process will be a detailed cleaning of the statue’s surface, gold plating repair and finally an application of gold leaf.
