Inmate dies after collapsing at Rhode Island max security prison

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Corrections said an inmate died Friday night after collapsing while at the facility’s gym.

A RIDOC statement said that the inmate collapsed while playing basketball, and that “officers and nursing staff immediately began administering life-saving measures.”

The inmate was then brought to Rhode Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

RIDOC added that the incident is under investigation.
