John O’Keefe niece testifies in Karen Read retrial after Tuesday trial cancelation

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Testimony resumed Wednesday in the murder retrial of Karen Read after Tuesday’s proceedings were canceled.

According to our Boston affiliate WCVB, trial was delayed due to the defendant’s health.

A Massachusetts State Police sergeant and John O’Keefe’s 17-year-old niece took the stand to testify.

O’Keefe had custody of his niece and nephew before his death.

According to WCVB, the night of O’Keefe’s death, the niece was woken up to Karen Read, describing the defendant as frantic.

The teen said read asked to use her phone to text O’Keefe and to call Jen McCabe.

The niece testified she heard Read say over the phone, “Maybe I hit him.”
