United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. (WLNE)

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha said that a Johnston beef slaughterhouse and one of its owners admitted to fraud over meat inspections.

Rhode Island Beef and Veal and one of its owners, Michael Quattrucci, pleaded guilty to charges of defrauding customers by claiming that beef had been inspected under the Federal Meat Inspection Act when it had actually not been.

The defendants also pleaded guilty to preparing beef without complying with inspection requirements as well as using an official inspection mark without permission.

The company had continued to pack meat and apply U.S. Department of Agriculture marks of inspection eight days after being served a suspension on August 19, 2019.

Quattrucci is scheduled to be sentenced on July 26 while the company is scheduled to be sentenced on September 7.
