Johnston chase ends with teen plunging car into Walmart pond in Cranston
CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A Johnston police chase concluded with a teen plunging a car into a pond next to Walmart in Cranston on Monday.
Johnston Police Chief Mark Vieira said the crash occurred on Plainfield Pike around 3:20 p.m. as an officer attempted to stop a car reported as stolen.
Vieira said the car veered across lanes, left the roadway, and landed in the retention pond located on Walmart property.
The 16-year-old driver also sideswiped a car in the area of Plainfield Street and Atwood Avenue earlier in the pursuit, per Vieira.
Officials said no one was injured in the incident.
Police said the teen was taken into custody for the following offenses:
- Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
- Reckless driving/eluding
- Duty to stop with an attended vehicle
