JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A Johnston firefighter died after a motorcycle accident on Tuesday evening, according to Cranston police.

Richard Gemma, 45, suffered a traumatic head injury after he was thrown off his motorcycle, according to police. He was traveling north on Belgium Avenue as as he went to make a left hand turn onto Felicia Drive, his front tire struck the curbing. Police say he tried to apply his breaks but was thrown from he motorcycle.

Gemma, who was not wearing a motorcycle, struck his head on the ground. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police department is still investigating what caused him to strike the curbing but said speed does not appear to be a factor.

According to the Johnston Fire Department, Gemma has been a firefighter for 6 years.
