Johnston park announces plan to replace trees destroyed by 2023 tornado
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Highland Memorial Park has announced a plan to replace 125 trees and 20 gardens destroyed by an August 2023 tornado.
The Memorial Tree and Garden program will allow contributors to plant trees or garden plants in designated park areas and select tree species and planting location.
Contributors can also opt to include a memorial plaque in their planting.
“We’re excited to see Highland Memorial Park come back to life after the tornado’s damage,” said Joseph Swift, president of Highland Memorial Park Cemetery.
“Our Memorial Tree and Garden Program is a wonderful way for folks to honor their loved ones and help us restore the park. By choosing a tree or plant, you’re not just adding green to our grounds—you’re helping us heal and keep this place a peaceful spot for everyone.”
The tornado struck on August 18th, 2023, and destroyed 20 garden areas and 125 trees including walnuts, pines, oaks and cherry blossoms.
