Johnston Police release body cam footage of car hitting officer, officer shooting driver

JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Johnston Police Department released bodycam footage of an officer shooting a Providence man after the man allegedly struck the officer with his car.

The department said the officer was responding to a report of a man and a woman arguing at the Shell gas station on Hartford Avenue.

Video showed Damian Peterson drive toward one officer while another officer approached the car.

The officer then shot Peterson, who crashed the car.

Both the officer and Peterson were transported to the hospital but were expected to recover.

Peterson’s bail was set at $50,000.
