Judge approves settlement in RIPTA-UHC data breach case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Rhode Island Superior Court judge approved a settlement in the class-action data breach lawsuit against the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority and United Healthcare, according to the ACLU of Rhode Island.
The ACLU of Rhode Island filed the lawsuit against RIPTA and United Healthcare over a massive data breach that happened in 2021.
The ACLU’s lawsuit said that the personal information of over 18,000 state employees was compromised.
According to the organization, the leaked information included Social Security numbers and healthcare information.
As part of the settlement, the employees who settled claim forms will “receive free credit monitoring for five years and various levels of compensation,” according to the ALCU.
According to the final approval order, each plaintiff will be awarded $1,500.
