Juror selection begins for trial of woman charged with killing Boston police officer
DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — It was a big day in Massachusetts, as jury members were chosen for the highly anticipated murder trial of Karen Read, charged in the death of her boyfriend.
Of the roughly 90 jurors that entered the Norfolk County Superior Courthouse Tuesday, four were selected.
As the trial kicked off, supporters who believe Read is innocent gathered outside of the buffer zone ordered by Judge Beverly Cannone.
Reed is accused of killing Boston police officer John O’Keefe by backing over him with her vehicle in January of 2022.
O’Keefe, who was Read’s boyfriend at the time, was found lying outside of a Canton home during a snowstorm and later died at the hospital.
Read pleaded not guilty to all charges, including second-degree murder and her defense argues that Read is the victim of a cover-up involving Massachusetts State Police.
Once the jury is selected, the trial is expected to take six to eight weeks.
