Groundbreaking for a new building in Providence will mark the first ‘shovel in the ground’ for the recently freed-up 195 land.

Johnson & Wales University is hosting the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for its new $40 million Engineering and Science Academic Center.

The building is going up on the corner of Friendship and Chestnut Streets and is scheduled to be complete by July 2016.

The university bought the land in 2012.

The JWU building is located on part of the 40 acres of land that have become vacant since Interstate 195 was altered, which are managed by the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission.
