Karen Read’s emergency request to pause second trial denied by Supreme Court judge

DEDHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — A Supreme Court judge denied Karen Read’s emergency request to pause her second trial.

No explanation was given by Justice Ketanji Jackson.

Karen Read’s attorneys filed the emergency petition with the U.S. Supreme Court for a stay of the state trial, according to a filing obtained by ABC.

This comes as a review is pending on her claims of constitutional violation.

In the document, Read’s team claimed the retrial violates the Double Jeopardy Clause because “the jury in her first trial reached a final and unanimous, but unannounced, decision that she is not guilty of [two of the three] charges.”
