WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE)– The City of Woonsocket announced that the Kendrick Avenue Footbridge, which carries pedestrians over the Blackstone River, is closing effective immediately.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation recently determined that the bridge was in need of significant repairs in order to ensure public safety, according to the city, necessitating its closure.

The bridge is located near both Hamlet Middle School and Villa Nova Middle School, and is often used by students during the school year.

There’s no timetable yet on when the bridge is expected to be reopened.
