Lane closures planned for Newport Bridge ramps project
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) officials are planning lane closures this weekend as part of the Newport Pell Bridge ramps project.
RIDOT said the left lanes on Route 138 East and West, between the Pell Bridge and JT Connell Highway in Newport, will be closed from Friday night at 5 p.m. through Monday morning at 7 a.m.
The lanes will be closed in order to remove and replace the center median, which is part of the ongoing Pell Bridge Ramps Phase 2 project, per officials.
Pell Bridge Ramps Phase 2 is a $74 million project rebuilding the road network connecting to the Pell Bridge to make travel into Newport easy and safe, according to RIDOT.
RIDOT said motorists planning to cross the bridge this weekend should expect delays and prepare additional time for travel.
Officials said this is one of the last remaining sections to be built, adding that the project should be finished by the end of 2024.
