It’s the latest craze and buzz food; especially now that it’s a daily must for Tom Brady and supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen.

Registered dietitian Theresa Jerominek explains the benefits of spirulina which is high in protein, fitonutrientes, and has all the essential building blocks your body needs to grow things like hair, nails, and muscle. It’s also considered an anti–inflammatory.

Spirulina is taken as a pill or broken down into powder form and is put on food, added to salad dressings, olive oil or mixed into smoothies.

Cranston based Agcore Technologies is one of the largest producers of spirulina in the northeast.

Agcore’s Algae farm includes 120 Bioreactors or deep water reactors where the product grows. It’s analyzed on a daily basis until they’re really to harvest.

The water is separated from the spirulina algae and it ends up looking like a green pudding. This separation would be the final step before it could be mixed in other ingredients, or dry it out.

The dry product has little to no taste and can be virtually be added to anything.

The bulk of Agcore’s spirulina goes to fish food but the company is working on developing snack foods, and is expanding because of the products popularity.

Dietitians say there are no dangers or downsides to taking spirulina, but people should make sure it comes from a safe source or reputable manufacturer like Agcore to avoid contamination.
