NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE)- A New Bedford Sergeant who lost a brave battle with COVID-19 was honored on Monday.

Sergeant Mike Cassidy died last week after battling COVID-19. He was described by Acting Chief Paul Oliveira as a “proud Officer who served the people of this city with his whole heart.”

Along with community members and loved ones, law enforcement from departments all across southern New England were in attendance to pay their respects.

“I knew Mike for a long time, and he was a great guy. He accomplished a lot in his life, he was on the force for about 27 years and was very well-respected,” Mayor Jon Mitchell told ABC6 News.

“He was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, a former Marine…and I don’t know too many former Marines who taught Zumba classes. He was an unusual guy like that, and someone that everyone liked. I’m gonna miss him a lot and so will everyone else.”

Sgt. Cassidy served in Desert Storm before returning to his hometown of New Bedford.
