Legendary Old Canteen restaurant on Federal Hill up for sale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A staple on Federal Hill is looking for a new owner.

The Old Canteen will is up for sale, according to realtor Peter Scotti.

“After 45 years, Chef Marzilli is ready to pass the baton to a new generation,” Scotti told ABC 6 News.

Scotti noted the restaurant is not shutting down and is still open for business with their famed Italian menu available in full.

Joe Marzilli’s Old Canteen opened in 1956.

“We pride ourselves as being the oldest family owned Italian restaurant in Rhode Island, serving the absolute freshest and finest quality Cuisine for over 60 years,” reads the restaurant’s website.

The Italian restaurant is noted for its famous guests maybe none more so than former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci.

Cianci even took Hollywood icon Frank Sinatra out to dinner there.

When Cianci passed away in 2016, the restaurant left his regular table vacant in his honor.
