LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Little Compton Town Council is looking to raise the town’s tax levy by 12 percent in order to fill a $1 million hole in their budget.

The council is meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Wilbur McMahon School, and will, alongside the town’s budget committee, be part of a public hearing regarding the town’s budget.

State law stipulates that towns cannot raise their tax levies by more than 4 percent per year, although exceptions have been made for unusual situations in the past.

Last week, legislation allowing the town to raise the levy by 12 percent was submitted to the General Assembly.

If it passes, the town will vote on the tax levy raise on June 17 at Little Compton’s Annual Financial Town Meeting before it goes into effect.
