Local company wins naming rights to Warwick public skating rink

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A new skating rink and recreational center is expected to be named after Greenwood Credit Union.

The credit union bid $300,000 dollars for the naming rights, according to the Warwick’s mayor Frank Picozzi.

“It’s going to be ice skating in the winter, roller skating, pickle ball,” said Picozzi. “There will be  restaurant nights down here, farmer markets, concerts for kids, movie nights. We have a lot of events planned.”

Picozzi expects the development to be completed in roughly a year and a half.

The Warwick city council will vote on Greenwood Credit Union’s bid Monday night.

You’re seeing so much energy and excitement here in Apponaug,” said Stephen McCallister, president of the city council. “We want to be the center of the city in the next couple of years. It will be a destination for not only Warwick residents but people across the state. So, I’m thrilled, and I look forward to supporting this bid this evening.”

The project is funded by a $5 million congressional earmark and $3 million in ARPA funds.

Like the one in Providence, Picozzi anticipates the rink will be self-sustaining.

He finished, “Providence seems to make a little bit of a profit, and I hope to do better.”

Once approved by the council, the city will hold a groundbreaking event in the near future.
