Local officials from R.I. weigh in on Biden and Trump debate

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden took the stage last night for a historic presidential debate.

It was the first time a former president and a current president ever debated against one another.

The next debate is set for September, as the election is just four months away.

Local officials across the country have been weighing in on the debate, including officials in Rhode Island.

A spokesperson for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said in a statement:

“President Biden is a decent, honest man and the only candidate in this race who will protect social security and Medicare, fight for middle-class families, lower costs, restore abortion rights, and defend our national security. Donald Trump will do none of these things and he lied to the American people over and over tonight. He is a convicted felon whose administration made our country less safe and created chaos in the lives of all Americans, with the exception of the billionaires to whom he gave away the store.”

In a statement, Congressman Gabe Amo said:

“Tonight’s debate was about substance and character — President Joe Biden demonstrated that he has both. From his Administration’s historic, robust investments in our communities to restoring America’s place in the world, he will finish the job in a second term.

Donald Trump’s barrage of unchecked lies, insults, and campaign of retribution demonstrated he only cares about himself. He’d bring back the chaos that Americans rejected four years ago.”

Amo will be in Nashua and Exeter today to campaign for Biden.
