Local officials react to passing of former President Jimmy Carter
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — As the nation remembers Jimmy Carter, we’re hearing from state and local leaders – but also from those who worked closely with the 39th president.
Jimmy Carter’s legacy has left an everlasting mark on communities nationwide and right here in Rhode Island.
Central Falls native Margaret McKenna, a former aide to President Carter during his time in the White House, reflected on his enduring impact.
“He was the first president that created domestic safe houses for women – the first one. Title IX was Jimmy Carter! I will say there’s nobody who modeled more integrity and ethics in that office than that man,” said McKenna.
As the nation mourns Carter’s passing, southern New England leaders are honoring his life and legacy.
Governor Dan McKee released a statement saying in part:
“Today, our nation lost a great man, a compassionate leader, and a true humanitarian. In everything he did, President Carter put service above self. He believed fiercely in lifting up others and lending a hand to those in need – an example for all of us to follow.”
Senator Jack Reed added:
“From the Naval Academy to the White House to Habitat for Humanity, Jimmy Carter led a life of public service and personal integrity. He was a man of uncommon principle, compassion, and faith who truly lived his values and made the world a better place.”
Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren reflected:
“Jimmy Carter was a true public servant and peacemaker. Our country is a better place because of him. My thoughts are with his family.”
Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey said:
“President Carter will be remembered as an honorable man who led with honesty and decency. May his example inspire generations to come.”
As Rhode Island and Massachusetts’ congressional delegation reflects on the remarkable legacy of President Carter, we’re reminded of his lifelong commitment to service, justice, and compassion.
