Local officials reveal new fabric shade at Providence Rink

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Mayor Brett Smiley and other local officials revealed the Providence Rink’s new fabric shade on Tuesday.
According to the City of Providence, the fabric shade is designed to “enhance climate resiliency, improve infrastructure and elevate the aesthetic appeal of the area.”
Additionally, the city said the new shade allows for events to occur year-round at the rink, a longer ice season, and constant UV protection and heat mitigation.
The rink is also expected to see further enhancements, including artistic lighting funded by Rhode Island Commerce.
“The new shade sail at the Providence Rink helps extend its use throughout the year while supporting our commitment to sustainability,” Mayor Smiley said. “By investing in this innovative design, we’re enhancing an already popular destination, ensuring it remains a vibrant and accessible part of Downtown. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the community with opportunities for recreation, events and gatherings. I’m excited to see the positive impact these new shade sails will have on Downtown for all who live, work and visit.”
