Locals hit Narragansett Town Beach after storm clears Monday

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — Narragansett saw coastal impacts from Monday’s storm, with strong waves crashing into the sea wall and heavy rain and wind added to the mix.

The storm prompted a coastal flood advisory and temporarily disrupted Block Island Ferry service.

Locals took to the beach once the storm cleared away.

“I am going to go surfing. Going to sneak in a little session before I have to get down to business,” Fedor Petrenko of Wakefield told ABC 6 News.

Some braved the elements in unique ways.

“I am here to do my daily cold plunge, and the waves look a little rough today but we just stayed shallow. I did sit in the car for two minutes contemplating what I was doing,” said Marina Wilkins of Narragansett.

For surfers like Fedor, the stronger the storm, the better — but still, understanding conditions before heading out into the waves is important.

“After a storm is when there is more wave energy in the water and the ocean, so it is the best time to go for sure,” said Petrenko.

“The attitude is definitely to check the forecast first and foremost to know what the size is going to be, what the tide is going to be, if the tide is low, then the waves are big, but there more exposed rocks, things like that,” Petrenko said.
