CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A long-standing Cranston pharmacy is set to close for good by the end of the month.

CVS Health announced Monday that it will acquire Phred’s Drug on Oaklawn Avenue in Cranston, closing the 62-year-old establishment and confidentially transferring their pharmacy files to the nearest CVS location at 1195 Oaklawn Avenue.

Phred’s Drug, founded in 1955, has been run by three consecutive generations of the Rossi family.

According to a CVS Health spokesperson, current Phred’s Drug owner Charles Rossi, himself a pharmacist for the last 40 years, plans to retire following the acquisition.

“As the owner of Phred’s Drug, my family and I have had the pleasure of serving Rhode Island residents for 62 years and would like to thank all of our patients and employees for their loyalty and dedication,” said Rossi.

“With the health care landscape changing day to day, we felt that CVS Health was better positioned to best serve the pharmacy needs of our patients and employees now and in the future. We are grateful to have been able to care for our many patients and we are confident that CVS Pharmacy will provide the same top-notch customer service and pharmacy expertise we have provided at Phred’s.”

Phred’s Drug is set to close its doors for good the evening of November 29th.
