Former State Senator, J. Michael Lenihan, has passed away Saturday after a battle with cancer.

He was a State Senator for 20 years representing East Greenwich, North Kingstown, and Narragansett. Lenihan retired in 2011.

Congressman, Jim Langevin, released a statement Sunday on Lenihan’s death,

“Senator Lenihan was an honest man and a charismatic leader who always put the needs of his constituents first. He was a fierce advocate for transparency and accessibility in government and his strong moral compass defined his distinguished career in public service. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Lenihan family. We cannot thank them enough for letting Mike dedicate so much of his time and passion to making Rhode Island better.”
