Lowell police: Male juvenile identified as subject with suspected firearm, airsoft gun recovered

LOWELL, Mass. (WLNE) — A male juvenile has been identified by Lowell police as the person allegedly seen carrying what turned out to be an airsoft gun Wednesday, according to Lowell Police Department Public Information Officer Deputy Superintendent Mark LeBlanc.

According to LeBlanc, Lowell police received a report of an individual possibly armed with a firearm at approximately 2:30 pm., and an immediate search of the area was initiated.

A Lowell PD drone was deployed in the search, along with the Massachusetts State Police Airwing and numerous police K9s.

The NEMLEC SWAT Team, FBI and ATF were also involved in the response.

Criminal Investigations Bureau detectives also initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

The report led to a campus-wide shelter in place order at UMass Lowell after the subject was reportedly seen on the school’s South Campus.
