PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch says he's leaving the race for Rhode Island governor because a divisive Democratic primary might cost the party the governor's seat.
Lynch made his announcement Thursday in a 4 1/2-minute videotaped message in which he also endorsed the only other Democrat in the race, Frank Caprio.
Lynch says a heated primary battle “would most likely result in the wrong leadership at a pivotal moment in time for Rhode Islanders.”
Lynch has trailed badly in fundraising behind Caprio, who can now focus his $1.7 million campaign war chest on former Sen. Lincoln Chafee, running for governor as an independent.
Chafee had about $420,000 in his campaign account as of the end of June, but could draw on his personal wealth to fund his campaign.
