MA House approves transgender bill

In a 116 to 36 vote the Massachusetts house overwhelmingly passed legislation on Wednesday that would protect transgender people in public places and allow them to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with the gender they identify with.

Hundreds crowded into the statehouse for the 6 hour long debate.

"Things that many of us take for granted, going to a restaurant, riding on the T, going shopping, visiting a loved one in the hospital, right now these are all fair game for harassment and unequal treatment,” said Rep. Christine Barber.

"We’re concerned about the safety of our kids.  This has nothing to do with transgender it has to do with the protection of our children,” said Rep. James Lyons.

Opponents gathered outside the chamber making sure they’re voices were heard. Critics of the bill say that sexual predators could make false claims to gain access to women’s locker rooms or bathrooms.

The House bill adds language that seeks to punish improper claims of gender identity. The change is something that Governor Charlie Baker says has helped sway him to say he will sign the legislation if it comes his way.

"I appreciate some of the public safety aspects of the House bill and I would sign that,” said Governor Baker.

The bill still needs approval by the Senate.
