Needy Rhode Islanders are getting some help with their home heating costs this winter. The Providence Diocese accepted a $100,000 check Wednesday for their ‘Keep the Heat On’ program.

The major donation comes from the National Grid Foundation. This year’s check was the largest in the 10 year history of the program.

“When people have to make decisions about whether to buy food or medicine or to stay warm… Those are decisions that people should never have to make,” said Bob Keller, President of the Foundation.

Over the years ‘keep the heat on’ has raised more than $2 million and helped more than 7,800 families in Rhode Island.

This year’s recipients include a struggling Cranston mother of three.
