WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – Citing his lengthy criminal record and the most recent and violent allegations against him, a judge held 47-year-old Joseph Cevoli on $100,000 bail with surety.
He says the fact that Cevoli allegedly assaulted a pregnant woman after breaking into her home was particularly concerning. He called his decision "academic" because Cevoli was later held without bail as a Superior Court violator, but the point was made.
"He’s currently on 3 separate Superior Court sentences for three separate B&E’s."
In fact, the judge said to call Cevoli a career criminal is an understatement. Charges against him range from drugs to robbery ,shoplifting, and burglary.
According to police, his most recent crime spree led him to cities and towns across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Part of that spree included Coventry where he’s seen on surveillance video breaking into Vanessa Lachance’s home on Monday.
And then, according to the pregnant mother, he assaulted her in front of her 8-year-old son.
According to police, Lachance is the one who identified Cevoli in a line-up.
He’s still a person of interest in other area break-ins.
