Man accused of breaking into ex-girlfriend’s home, pointing a gun arrested

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Middletown and Newport police, along with the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, arrested a Newport man on a litany of charges Thursday.

On October 2, Zildjian Baptista allegedly broke into the home of his ex-girlfriend, entered her bedroom and pointed a gun at her and another person before leaving.

Baptista was arrested at his Newport home without incident and Middletown police took custody of him, according to Middletown police.

A 9mm handgun, legally owned by Baptista, was seized along with a high-capacity magazine.

Baptista was arraigned in Newport Second District Court on October 3 for:

  • Domestic violence – felony assault and/or battery
  • Domestic violence – unlawful breaking/entering dwelling house 1st offense
  • Carrying dangerous weapon committing crime of violence 1st offense
  • Carrying pistol revolver without license or permit
  • Large capacity feeding devices prohibited
  • Child endangerment 1st offense
  • Felony assault and/or battery

Baptista pleaded not guilty and was held on $10,000 surety bail and was given a December 4 screening date.
