Chepachet man accused of driving drunk, crashing into police cruiser in Smithfield

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — A Chepachet man is accused of driving drunk and crashing into a police cruiser in Smithfield late Thursday night.

The crash happened just after 10 p.m. on the Putnam Pike.

Police said the officer in the cruiser at the time of the crash was treated at the scene for injuries.

A construction worker was also hit by the car, police said. The 35-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver, identified as Craig DiPetrillo, 50, was arrested. He was charged with driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury, driving to endanger resulting in personal injury and carrying a weapon while intoxicated.

DiPetrillo is expected to be arraigned Friday morning.
