A Taunton man was taken into custody after being accused of  impersonating a police officer Wednesday.

Taunton Police, with help from Massachusetts State Police, apprehended Seth Amidon, 57, after he told numerous parties that he was a police officer.

A report from Coyle Cassidy High School stated that an unknown individual approached a student outside the Holy Rosary Church, telling him to have all the students go back inside for safety. The student described the subject as male, 6 feet tall, and departed in a blue vehicle.

Police received more calls about that vehicle on State Street near Lawrence Street where an individual claimed to be a cop searching for an escaped convict.

Massachusetts State Police stopped the vehicle on Bay Street and took Amidon into custody after a handgun was found under his driver seat, which was later determined to be a pellet gun.

He is believed to be responsible for identifying himself as a police officer at the Coyle Cassidy School and the Hopewell Park and Whittenton areas.

Amidon was turned over to Taunton Police where he was charged with six counts of impersonating an officer, 6 counts of disorderly conduct, and disturbing a school assembly. He is held on $5,000 bail and will be arraigned in Taunton District Court on Thursday.

Anyone who may have interacted with Amidon is asked to contact Sgt. William Henault of Taunton Police at (508) 824-7522.
