WRENTHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — The Massachusetts man accused of causing a crash that killed a 10-year-old on Saturday in Plainville was arraigned Monday and pled not guilty.

42-year-old Michael Escolas of Oxford is facing 14 charges, including vehicular manslaughter, operating under the influence, negligent operation, marked lanes violation, larceny of a motor vehicle, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Escolas is being ordered held on $100,000 bail with conditions, including that he may not drive.

According to Massachusetts State Police, Escolas was driving at a high rate of speed on Route 1 South in a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which he allegedly stole from a parking lot at Gillette Stadium. He’s then accused of rear-ending a Nissan Altima stopped at a red light near the intersection of Route 1 and Interstate 495 around 8:40 p.m.

The car was carrying a family of six, including a mother, father, and their four children. One of the children, a 10-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Escolas was ordered to return to court on Sept. 19 for a probable cause hearing.
