PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WLNE) — The Portsmouth Police Department said a 46-year-old man from Middletown was arrested after a pursuit Wednesday.

Richard Troupe was accused of fleeing from Middletown police around 2 p.m. due to violating a domestic no contact order.

A Portsmouth officer then began pursuing Troupe when he entered the town, which eventually led to the suspect driving in the opposite lane of traffic, pulling off the road, and then hitting a rock and causing “disabling damage” to the vehicle.

Troupe allegedly fled the scene on foot and police said he was taken into custody while leaving a yard off West Main Road.

A female passenger was detained at the scene of the crash, and Melville Elementary School was given a shelter-in-place order while the search for Troupe occurred.
