Man arrested for Pawtucket murder held without bail

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Michael Fernandes, 34, appeared before a judge Monday afternoon after allegedly shooting and killing a woman Friday night.

The judge entered no plea on the five charges he faces on Fernandes’ behalf and ordered a competency hearing after the accused became emotional.

Fernandes is accused of shooting and killing Jocelyn Docouto, 33, a Central Falls native who city leaders say was both well-known and well-liked in her community.

The shooting happened Friday night around 8 p.m. on Central Avenue, right outside of the victim’s salon.

A makeshift memorial outside of the salon on Central Avenue is filled with candles and balloons honoring her life.

The case marks Pawtucket’s first homicide of the year and is due back in court Feb. 5.
