PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Providence Police officers have charged a man with assault, after allegedly spraying a RIPTA bus driver with Raid hornet killer.

According to police, around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, they responded to Cranston Street and Linwood Avenue. Police found a RIPTA bus driver in the process of rinsing out his eyes.

Detectives say before they arrived on scene, the driver had repeatedly asked John Meloccaro, 66, to get off the bus after he did not have enough money to ride. The driver tells police Meloccaro became argumentative, and then sprayed him in the right eye with Raid hornet killer and then ran away.

Police tracked Meloccaro down a short distance away. He was taken into custody and charged with felony assault.
