PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence police officer was assaulted last night while escorting a patient out of Miriam Hospital, according to officials.

It happened overnight when an officer was escorting 34-year-old Damien Kilgore out of the building, when he pulled out a concealed knife and extended it toward him.

Officials said the officer, Officer Ralph Abenante, drew his department issued firearm ordering Kilgore to drop the knife.

The suspect fled the scene and was later apprehended and charged at the Speedway Gas Station on North Main Street.
