Firefighters inspecting smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at a home in Johnston last week uncovered a hidden stash of marijuana plants, according to police.

Police seized 38 plants from the basement and first floor of the house on Winfield Road.

The plants had a street value of $28,000.

Police arrested 22-year-old Mason Dourado, who had rented the house for just four months, was arrested and charged with manufacturing marijuana and growing it in a school zone.

Dourado, who lives in East Providence, told police he has a medical marijuana license but the amount of plants in the home exceeds the amount allowed under state law.

He was arraigned Wednesday and held on $10,000 surety bail.
