NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A man was arrested after allegedly threatening a couple with an air gun at a motel in North Smithfield on Friday.

The North Smithfield Police Department said 38-year-old Raymond Unwin of Woonsocket was charged with felony assault by use of devices similar in appearance to firearms.

Authorities said officers responded to Travelers Motor Lodge at 2:03 a.m. for a report of a man who pointed a gun at another person and then entered a room at the motel.

Police detained three men leaving the room and conducted an investigation revealing Unwin as the alleged offender.

The victim told police he was walking through the motel parking lot with his girlfriend when a man pointed a gun at them and left after a short exchange.

Officers said they confiscated a Colt CO2 Pistol in Unwin’s possession.

In addition to felony assault, Unwin was charged with disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer, according to officials.

He was arraigned at Third District Court on Friday, and a no-contact order was put into effect between him and the victim.

Unwin’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 12.
