FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A man was shot during an arrest in Georgia on Tuesday in connection with a February murder in Fall River.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said 32-year-old Kevin Barton of Fall River was taken into custody in De Kalb County after being shot by an officer.

Officials said Barton was indicted on May 17 in connection to the Feb. 9 shooting of 34-year-old Joshua Medeiros near the intersection of Nashua Street and Blackstone Street.

The indictment was sealed, as Barton was not in custody at the time of the ruling, and officers were actively seeking to locate and apprehend him for the past six weeks.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Barton ran from members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force after he was found in the city of Stone Mountain.

Officials said he pulled a gun from his clothing and raised it toward a deputy before being shot and taken into custody.

Authorities said Barton is currently in stable condition at a Georgia hospital.

He was indicted on charges of murder, carrying an illegal firearm, carrying a loaded illegal firearm, larceny and possession of a large-capacity firearm.

The district attorney’s office said Barton will also be charged in Georgia as a fugitive from justice, saying it is unclear when he will be returned to Massachusetts for arraignment in Fall River.
