NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — New Bedford police are investigating an early Thursday morning shooting that left one man dead.
The shooting occurred on Acushnet Avenue at 2:45 a.m. Thursday. Neighbors say they heard five gunshots, and when they went outside, they saw the victim lying in the street.
Neighbors tell ABC6 News that a man, 33-year-old Marcus Roberts of New Bedford, was lying in front of a boutique, and it appeared he had gotten shot in the stomach.
They say he was conscious and talking to first responders, but he was then sent to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Detectives seemed to be focused on their investigation Thursday morning on the cross road, Tinkham Street.
A neighbor says the area had been prone to trouble over the years. In fact, there was a bar nearby that has since been shut down but used to attract violence to the neighborhood.
He says he heard shooting from his bedroom.
“I heard 5 shots fired: Pow pow pow pow pow. Just like that, I knew there were shots because it’s not the first time I heard them around here,” said Clement Costa who heard the gun shots.
New Bedford police were alerted to the shooting by their shot spotter gunshot detection system. That was what notified them where the shots were heard.
At last check, there is still no suspect in custody.
