PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A Pawtucket man who was shot by a Providence police sergeant after he opened fire on the sergeant has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Twenty-six-year-old Duvall Carty was sentenced Thursday in Providence Superior Court after pleading guilty to felony assault and gun charges.

Prosecutors say the shootout in July 2013 came as Providence officers were responding to a disturbance outside a South Providence nightclub. Authorities say police saw Carty with a gun and chased him into a parking lot, where Carty fired a .25-caliber pistol at Sgt. Curt Desautels.

Carty missed and Desautels returned fire, striking and wounding Carty. A grand jury later found that Desautels was justified in shooting Carty.
