PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence man was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of his role in a 2020 gang-related killing, prosecutors said Monday.

The Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office said 23-year-old Justin Chandler was sentenced to double-life sentences for murder and related assault and firearms charges.

Prosecutors said Chandler was the getaway driver for a shooter who killed 22-year-old Devin Delacruz and injured his friend, Nazaski Carrasco Smith, on the morning of Dec. 4, 2020.

The two were waiting to pick up Smith’s four-year-old son from a bus stop in Olneyville.

A hooded person walked up to their car and shot both of them twice.

Delacruz died at Rhode Island Hospital. Smith survived after several surgeries.

The hooded person, who has not been identified, was picked up in a black Nissan Altima.

Authorities determined Chandler was the driver after a lengthy investigation.

The investigation also uncovered that Chandler was in an ongoing gang-related feud with the two victims.
