Man in custody after New Bedford shooting leaves one hospitalized

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — A man was taken into custody Monday after a shooting in New Bedford resulted in another man being taken to the hospital.

The New Bedford Police Department said 38-year-old Christopher Smith was arrested in connection with the incident on Austin Street.

Officers responded to Austin Street near County Street around 2:30 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim.

Responding units found Smith on-scene and apprehended him after he tried to run from police.

Authorities said they recovered a gun in Smith’s possession, adding that the victim was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Smith was charged with assault with intent to murder by discharge of a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license.

Police said Smith has an extensive criminal history, including a prison sentence in 2016 on charges of kidnapping, breaking and entering, and strangulation.
