Man in custody for domestic assault, kidnapping after standoff in Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — The Pawtucket Mayor’s Office and Police Department said that a person was taken into custody after a standoff on the corner of Power Road and Oriole Avenue.
40-year-old James Perkins, of Cranston, was charged with domestic assault, domestic kidnapping, domestic assault by strangulation, domestic felony assault, and domestic disorderly conduct.
Chief Tina Goncalves said that officers were called to a home on Power Road around 6 a.m. for a well-being check.
Upon arrival, police found a woman across the street, wearing only a blanket, and suffering from injuries. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Goncalves said that police then learned that Perkins, the alleged perpetrator, was in the apartment that was the subject of the well-being call.
Officers were unsuccessful in getting the suspect to exit the building, and members of the Pawtucket Police Special Response Team and the East Providence Police Department were called for assistance.
Perkins was eventually taken into custody and brought to a hospital for evaluation.
Goncalves added that Perkins was wanted for previous domestic offenses, and will be arraigned on Sunday.
A spokesperson for the city said that the standoff was an isolated incident.
